VINTAGE ORIGINAL 1920's BLACK STRAW WOMEN'S TURNED UP BRIM HAT w/ LARGE BUTTON

Description

Here is a vintage original 1920's women's fine black straw hat with a turned up brim and a 2 1/2" diameter metal button.  The crown's inside band area circumference is about 23".  The button is sewn to the front of the hat, on a ribbon band, and the upper hole needs to be reattached.  The ends of the ribbon have fraying.  There are several sections of edges, where the straw is bent to fold upwards, that have split.  The lining is detached and torn in those areas.  The splits probably occurred because the hat was crushed at those points.
From how it was stored for nearly 100 years, it needs professional (or competent) blocking to hold a proper shape, but i
t's unknown what can be done about splits in woven straw.
When not on the manikin's head, it is crushed and has creases and indentations.   I tried steaming a hat with a wig head, and the wig head melted.  The lining needs cleaning.
The hat was unsold and stored from the Gayhart-Price Millinery, a Milwaukee, WI hat shop that operated from 1893 through the early 1930's.  It was a wholesale and retail shop
, and hats were trimmed to order.  Many of these hats were not yet trimmed
