Woman Listening to the Radio Teenie Harris 11×14 Photo
Charles “Teenie” Harris was a trailblazer in professional photography. The African American artist’s atelier was in Pittsburgh where he operated an independent studio, but he plied most of his career in the service of the Pittsburgh Courier, the leading black Steel City newspaper of the time. It was a chronicle of a vibrant urban community during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras. In his images, he captured the city’s urban flavor in everyday experiences as well as people who shaped the 20
    th
century – stars like Lena Horne, Jackie Robinson, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. Currently, the Carnegie Museum of Art is entrusted with many of his negatives archives. With permission from his estate many of these iconic images are now available and are presented for enjoyment.
