Description
I believe this35
star
is a small Tiffany flag remnant. This
35
star
flag dates from 1863-1865. It is an extremely rare silk flag remnant with silk thread hand sewn gold embroidered
star
s, and Hand sewn stripes. The remnant of the canton measures 5" x 5" and overall size is 6.5" x 5". The frame measures 13.5" wide, and 12.25" high.
The 35th star was added to the flag in recognition of West Virginia statehood on June 20, 1863.
Tiffany's of N.Y. made some flags for the war and I believe this was one of the smaller least expensive types of personal flags, that Tiffany sold. It is identical in pattern (my canton is upside down), to the flag talked about below in the "The Stars and Stripes".
I also think that Tiffany different levels of embroiderers, whom did not have the skills when first started, so these flags were either given away or sold as cheaper personal flags. This is all theory of course, but would make sense in the quality of the stars and their shapes.
The
star
s are gold in color and were built up in a crystal pattern of five conjoined lozenges. This is also seen in "The
Star
s and the Stripes" by Boleslaw Mastai. An identical flag (in the
star
pattern) is found on page 206 and is identical to George McClellan's presidential campaign flag. I am not saying this is a McClellan presidential campaign flag but is likely made by the same manufacturer owing to the identical pattern and
star
s.
This flag was found inside the lining of a Union Civil War kepi (hat). It is authentic and the gold embroidered
star
s are an extremely rare pattern.
The flag has been framed in a museum quality conservation frame with non -glare UV plastic glass.
