FOR SALE A RARE SINGLE APPLIQUE FLAG FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY.THE FLAG MEASURES 22 5/8" ON HOIST AND 45 1/4" ON THE FLY.
FLAG IS ENTIRELY HAND SEWN.
THE BLUE FIELD IS CONSTRUCTED OF 3 PANELS OF WOOL BUNTING.
THE STARS ARE MADE OF LINEN OR COTTON AS IS THE HOIST, AND ARE SINGLE APPLIQUE.
THE HOIST HAS 2 HAND SEWN WHIP-STITCHED GROMMETS.
TWO FLAG EXPERTS AND AN INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE EXPERT HAVE LOOKED AT THIS FLAG.
EACH AGREED THAT THIS IS A PRE 1850'S FLAG. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY ANOTHER EXPERT THAT
IT COULD BE PRE - 1830'S. I DON'T KNOW OTHER THAN IT IS DEFINATELY FROM THE EARLY FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY.
I WAS TOLD IT WAS A REPURPOSED FLAG OR A CAPTAINS GIG OR LONGBOAT FLAG FROM A SHIP.
IT CAME FROM A HOUSE IN FRAMINGHAM, MASS. AND HAS THE INITIALS T.B.S. WRITTEN ON ONE OF THE STARS.
IT HAS SOME STAINS AND 3 LARGE HOLES 2 LARGE TEARS AND SOME MOTHING, (SEE PHOTOS).
