    NASA-Dorothy Vaughan-NACA first African American Female Supervisors
    DESCRIPTION:
    Born: September 20, 1910, Kansas City, Missouri, United States
    Died: November 10, 2008, Hampton, Virginia, United States. Dorothy Vaughan was one of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics' (NACA) first African American female supervisors. In 1949, she was promoted as head of the West Area Computing Unit at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (now NASA Langley Research Center) in Hampton, Virginia. where she collaborated with other human computers such as Vera Huckel and Sara Bullock to compile an algebraic methods handbook for the mechanical calculating machines used by the group. During Vaughan's career at the NACA and at NASA, she became an expert FORTRAN programmer and contributed to the Scout Launch Vehicle Program. Vaughan was portrayed by actress Octavia Spencer in the Oscar-winning film "Hidden Figures." On June 1, 2017 she was inducted into the Langley Hall of Honor.
