Vintage 1960's Frank Olive Ladies Felted Fur Hat
Up for sale is a wonderful vintage ladies hat designed by Frank Olive and made in Italy.
The rear has a small brown gros-grain bow.
The shape is best described as a modified bowler: the basic profile is that of a domed cloche, but it has a gently upturned rim and
sits high on the head
in the manner of a bowler, not pulled down close around the ears, etc.
Diana Rigg (the sexy Mrs. Peel in the original "Avengers") rocked this style best!!
(Note that the top hat in the listing is more rounded on top and the brim smaller than that of a traditional bowler).
I am the purchaser and sole owner of this hat, which has been worn only a couple of times.
I bought this hat at the fabled G. Fox Department Store in downtown Hartford, Connecticut in the summer of 1967, prior to going off the college.
It has been in storage for most of the past 54 years.
I believe the material is a finely sheared beaver, possibly mixed with nutria or similar fur (note a sprinkling of tiny white hairs in the close-ups).
It has a sheen and a laid-down fine fur finish and the body was made in Italy by Trevi, then finished and labeled in New York by Frank Olive.
The inside circumference is about 22.5" so I would say it is made for a smaller woman's head.
In excellent vintage condition as seen.
Historical Note:
Frank Olive
was a great talent - he designed costumes and sets, and was a sculptor as well.
Frank came to New York in the 1950's, finding his niche in hats. His creations were described as "whimsically sophisticated", with clean lines. In no time his talent drew attention. His hats were sold at
I. Magnin, Neiman-Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bonwit Teller.
He also collaborated with or designed for Lillie Rubin, Oscar de la Renta and Pauline Trigere.
