    Description

At 75 I’m a retiring antique dealer who is beginning to clean out his stock of stored treasures.
For about forty years I was a pretty fanatical collector of early American flags and lots of other patriotic flag collectibles.
I was honored to have a great collection of them, but I always knew that I was only their custodian for a while and eventually it would be time to move them on to their next owner.
1890 was an interesting year in the history of collecting as five states were admitted to the Union and the designs of our national banner evolved quickly.
Because it had been thirteen years since any new states had joined the Union, flag makers jumped the gun and produced some 39 star flags in anticipation of “the Dakotas” coming in as one state.
However, both North and South Dakota were admitted on the same day, making this 39 star flag instantly obsolete.
Additionally, of the 39 star flags produced in anticipation this one with the stars in columns 7-6-7-6-7-6 is even more unusual as the typical star configuration was in rows.
Only a connoisseur of collecting our national banner will appreciate such a subtle difference, but it is a noteworthy one for those serious collectors.
Buyer to pay shipping within the United States.
Due to ebay policies, I reluctantly have a “no returns” policy, so look closely at photos and ask questions first.
